Man dead at hospital after hit-and-run takes place on Philips Highway, police say

JSO's Sergeant Hungerford says the man was walking in the middle of the road when he was struck by a light color, 4-door vehicle in which fled the scene.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man died Tuesday night in Jacksonville after a hit-and-run incident took place on Philips Highway on Jacksonville's Southside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Officers responded to the 4100 block of Philips Highway at approximately 11:21 p.m. in reference to the man who was struck in the middle of the road. Upon arrival, JSO called on the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department to render aid to the unidentified man in his mid-40s as he was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

JSO's Sergeant Robert Hungerford says the man appeared to be walking in the middle of the road when he was struck by a light color, 4-door vehicle in which fled the scene in a "probably northbound" direction after striking the man.

Hungerford says the man was hit in the center northbound lane on the highway and that there was debris left in the road, including "a driver side or passenger side mirror." He says the 4100 block of the highway will be closed for the next hour until scene is cleared up.

Hungerford says the driver who left the scene could be charged with a felony for leaving the scene.

Police say this hit-and-run incident marked as the 125th traffic fatality in Duval County this year.
