Woman in Westside neighborhood comes home to man shot in her backyard

Sheryl Anglin tells First Coast News she was shocked when she came home Thursday to find police tape surrounding her home and a man shot in her backyard.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Neighbors in a Westside neighborhood on Oxbow Road claim they are a close knit community, where everyone knows each other.

On Thursday, they were all left shaken up after a man caused chaos on their street in the afternoon.

"This is a very quiet neighborhood," Sheryl Anglin told First Coast News. "We've never had any problems at all down here."

Anglin was surprised to come home and find out someone had been shot in her backyard. Her neighborhood was turned into a crime scene with police tape around her house.

The man shot in her backyard was being chased earlier by police.

According to Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, a K-9 Officer attempted to do a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle from Suwanee County. Police said the man kicked a woman out of the car and drove off.

Further down the road, the officer found the stolen car and the man ran away, according to JSO.

The sheriff's office said the man then made his way to Anglin's neighborhood. Police said he walked up to her neighbor, entered his garage and tried to steal his car, but was not able to.

He then ran through pastures behind homes and ended up in Anglin's backyard, JSO said.

"Ran through the back of the pasture, there's 20 acres back there," said Anglin. "He ran through all of that."

The man then encountered her neighbor again.

Police said the neighbor "feared for his life," and shot the man in the leg.

"I went back there to see if I could help," Anglin said. "He was just hollering, my hip, my hip, my hip, you know. About that time, police came, rescue came, and they took him from there."

The man who is 30 years old is expected to survive, according to police, as the homeowner who shot him is cooperating with JSO.

JSO told First Coast News they will be investigating and gathering statements from everyone involved, including the woman in the stolen car, the man who was shot, and the homeowner who shot him.
