JSO: Traffic stop for stolen car leads to suspect shot by Westside homeowner

Around 12:15 p.m., a suspect driving a stolen car, abandoned it and tried to carjack a homeowner, before the homeowner shot him.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said a homeowner shot a suspect after the suspect fled from a traffic stop after "several incidents compounded on each other" in the Herlong Area Thursday afternoon.

An officer attempted a traffic stop on a man in his 30's driving a stolen vehicle out of Suwannee County at approximately 12:15 p.m., police said. At 3600 Spring Lake Drive, the suspect kicked a person out the vehicle and fled from the scene, police said.

The suspect arrived at a residential area at 2000 Oxbow Road. JSO said the suspect entered a garage of a home and pointed a gun at a person and tried to carjack him before fleeing. The suspect again approached the home, police said, encountering the same homeowner who then shot the man in his leg.

The homeowner, a man in his 50's, is cooperating with JSO.

Police recovered the vehicle on Justin Road West.

Police are investigating the reported gunfire and if the shooting was in self-defense.
