Storm, 'unconfirmed tornado' knock out power to 43 homes near Cecil Airport

JFRD and JEA crews worked on downed powerlines and trees Sunday night to restore power to people living on Cochise Drive.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Folks living near Cecil Airport on Jacksonville’s Westside had a long afternoon of storms turn into an even longer night.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department reported 43 people were without power for several hours on Sunday.

Not only were crews assessing the damage of an unconfirmed tornado, they were looking for signs of hail damage as well.

"It hit me right in the head, and it didn’t feel good," said Bryson Westinghouse while he held a plateful of balls of hail.

Westinghouse had a rude awakening for the first time he ever saw hail, with one plunking him on the head.

He gathered as much as he could, displaying about a dozen quarter-sized balls of hail on a plate.

“I’ve never seen hail before," said Westinghouse. "I said, ‘I’m hail boy.’”

Westinghouse and his grandfather were fortunate they didn’t have any damage during the tornado warning besides the knock on his head.

A neighbor living down the street's doorbell camera caught their wooden swing getting ripped completely off by a gust and thrown against the side of the house.

“We had an unconfirmed tornado touch down in this area behind me," said JFRD Chief Keith Powers. "There is some moderate damage in there. A lot of trees down, a lot of roof damage.”

JFRD and JEA crews worked to repair a downed powerline to restore power to the 43 homes that were out.

“There are some of them that have roofs ripped off, some of them have shingles missing," said Powers. "There’s awnings and stuff like that that are ripped and tore down.”

The fire chief says he isn’t aware of any injuries from the storm.

The National Weather Service will be in the area Monday morning to survey damage from the storm.
