County-by-county shelters opening amid hard freeze warning across First Coast

It's been roughly one year since a Freeze Warning was extended to include the Beaches in Jacksonville's Duval County. Here's a look at places to stay warm.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — After a hard freeze warning was issued across Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia for Wednesday morning, counties across the First Coast are opening cold weather shelters for anyone in need.

The freeze warning will last between the hours of 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. Wednesday, but shelters are opening their doors Tuesday evening as temperatures begin to fall. 

Here's a county-by-county look at some shelters in your area. 

Duval County

The City of Jacksonville announced multiple places people can go to seek shelter.

The Legends Center, located at 5130 Soutel Dr. is open from Tuesday 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The center will provide water. Guests are asked to bring the following:

  • Air mattresses, blankets, pillows, or other bedding 
  • Snacks and medication 
  • Games, toys, and books 
  • Hygiene, and comfort items

JTA buses will be avaliable to take individuals to the Legends Center. 

Other non-profits will be providing shelter at the following locations:

  • City Rescue Mission, 234 W. State Street, 32202 (Starting at 2:30 p.m. all guests will receive a hot meal, access to showers and clean clothing.)
  • Mission House, 465 11th Ave. N., Jacksonville Beach
  • St. Paul’s by the Sea Episcopal – Parish Hall, 1150 5th Street N, Jacksonville Beach, 32250 (For overnight services)
  • Sulzbacher Center, 611 East Adams St., 32202
  • For Men: 5455 Springfield Blvd. 32208 
  • For Women and Children:  Trinity Rescue Mission, 622 W. Union St.

St. Johns County

In St. Johns County, the First United Methodist Church in St. Augustine is opening its doors for anyone seeking shelter Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning. 

The shelter, located at 118 Kings St., will be open from Tuesday 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Putnam County 

In Putnam County, anyone can go to a cold weather shelter at the First Presbyterian Church of Palatka, Westminster Hall, 126 South 2nd St., Palatka. 

The shelter will be open Tuesday at 7 p.m. and will be open until 7 a.m. Wednesday.

For families, Life Church, located at 2701 Reid St., will open on Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Wednesday.

Flagler County

In Flagler County, the Rock Transformation Center, located at 2200 N. State St., is open for people without homes, as well as anyone who is without heat. 

The shelter will be open from 5 p.m. Tuesday to 8 a.m. Wednesday.
