JSO: Man dead after driving vehicle without headlights over sidewalk, into traffic box in Mandarin

The man traveled onto the sidewalk and struck a traffic control box, police say.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man is dead after a traffic crash in the Mandarin area Monday night, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's office.

Police say around 7:30 p.m., a man in his 60s was driving northbound in a Kia Soul on old St. Augustine Road, just before San Jose Boulevard, without headlights on.

The man then traveled onto the sidewalk and struck a traffic control box, police say.

The man was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead, JSO says. The identity of the man was not released by police.

JSO says there were no other vehicles involved.

Police say there was no evidence at the scene to indicate that alcohol played a factor in this crash, but that ultimately, the toxicology report from the Medical Examiner’s Office will have to determine that.

Some roadways in the area will be closed for the next hour or so. Police are advising river's to use caution in the area

JSO says this marks the 41st traffic fatality this year.
