FHP: Man involved in deadly hit-and-run in Orange Park stopped by deputies miles from crash scene

The driver of the vehicle involved fled the scene but was stopped by Clay County Sheriff's deputies nearly six miles from the deadly crash.

ORANGE PARK, Fla. — A 67-year-old man is dead after a hit-and-run crash in Orange Park on Christmas night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Around 9:10 p.m. Sunday, a pickup truck was traveling south on Miller Street near the intersection of Filmore Lane, directly behind the 67-year-old, who was riding a bicycle.

Troopers said as the truck neared the bicyclist, its right side struck the man causing him to fall into the roadway.

The 27-year-old driver did not stop and fled the scene, according to FHP.

Deputies with the Clay County Sheriff's Office ultimately stopped the driver at College Drive and Jefferson Avenue, roughly six miles from the scene of the crash.

The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet and died from his injuries.

The truck driver was not injured.
