Storms knock tree onto Fort White home, causing hole in the roof

Homeowners spent the day with chainsaws in hand cutting up the massive tree taken out by the stormy weather.

FORT WHITE, Fla. — Wednesday morning’s storms meant a rude awakening for some folks in Columbia County.

A tree snapped in half and fell on a Fort White home near State Road 47.

“I heard a loud bang, and then I heard above my bedroom three cracking noises, like pops, and then I ran," said Tonya Starr.

Starr's day started with a jolt as she had to spring out of bed after hearing those cracking noises.

As soon as she got out of her bedroom, the tree came down right over where she was sleeping, popping a hole in the roof.

“It shook the whole house, dropped a few picture frames inside, and it cracked a powerpole," said Starr.

Fortunately, the damage was relatively minor and lineman only had to briefly cut power to the house while they fixed the power line hit by the tree.

“It was a lot, but I’m just glad everybody’s safe," said

They cut the tree into five piles and patched the hole in the roof while they wait for the insurance company to come out for an estimate.
