Mother is suspect in fatal stabbing of child, DCF report says

The Aug. 19 death is one of the latest of 26 child fatalities posted on the state website, and also one of 12 under investigation by the agency.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 6-year-old girl who died a week ago "sustained lethal injuries when she was stabbed by her mother," according to the Florida Department of Children and Families child fatality report for Duval County.

The Aug. 19 death in a house in the 1800 block of New Haven Road is one of the latest of 26 child fatalities posted on the state website, and also one of 12 under investigation by the agency.

The brief report also says the child's mother, "whose parental rights were previously terminated," was visiting the child's home when the stabbing occurred. After the child was stabbed, the older woman turned the blade on herself, police said. That left the woman in critical condition, but the Sheriff's Office has provided updates on her and adding that "No arrest has been made in this investigation" as of late Monday.

The Children and Families department indicates that it had prior involvement with the child in last five years, but did not specify what.

No one at the home would comment on the incident the morning after, but police said the weapon appeared to be a kitchen knife, and four other people were in the home at the time, one of those another child younger than 10.
