Police investigating death of 20-month-old girl in Jacksonville

Police say they have not determined the cause of death of the child but are investigating two potential "scenes."

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 20-month-old child.

The infant was pronounced dead at a local hospital after a parent drove her there early Tuesday morning, police said. Life-saving measures were unsuccessful.

The cause of death has not been determined and police would not release the injuries the child had.

Police have not determined if foul play was involved but are investigating two potential "scenes."

The scenes are the child's parents homes, one of which is in the 1400 block of East 14th Street, according to JSO.

Neighbors in the area say it caught them by surprise to see police on their street.

“I was kind of shocked to see the police and news in the area because this is a pretty quiet area," said Robert Simmons, who owns a property nearby.

Simmons says he's saddened to hear what happened.

"It's sad when you think Christmas is right around the corner and this is what brings joy to children and to lose a child this close to a holiday like that is pretty sad," said Simmons.

JSO says this is the standard protocol and they "investigate all deaths."

The parents are cooperating with police.
