Holiday Money Hunt: How to see if you're owed part of $162 million in unclaimed property across Jacksonville

Missing money? Join the Holiday Money Hunt to find out if you're owed part of the $162 million in unclaimed property across the Jacksonville area.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Missing money? What better time to track it down than the start of the holiday season.

That's the idea behind the Department of Financial Services Holiday Money Hunt, kicking off Monday. Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis announced the statewide campaign, stating people and businesses in the Jacksonville area alone are owed more than $162 million in unclaimed property.

"Now is the perfect time to see if you or your business has unclaimed property in Florida," Patronis said. "During the holidays, everyone can use a little extra cash, and an unexpected check from the State of Florida may help make things a little brighter this year."

One in five Floridians has unclaimed property waiting to be spoken for, according to a news release from the Department of Financial Services. Currently, Florida has $2.5 billion in unclaimed funds waiting to be returned to the rightful owner.
