DCPS board narrows superintendent search down to two candidates

Dr. Daniel Smith and Dr. Chris Bernier are the last two candidates the school board will consider over the next two weeks.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Duval County School's superintendent search is down to two.

The board unanimously voted at a meeting Tuesday to send Dr. Daniel Smith and Dr. Chris Bernier to the final round.

Smith served as the Chief of Staff for Loudon County Schools in the Washington D.C. suburbs.

Bernier was the superintendent of Lee County Schools in South Florida, in the Ft. Myers area.

The DCPS board was expected to narrow it down to 3 people from their five semifinalist, but they only picked two, feeling those are the only ones they wanted to hear more from.

Board Chairman Darryl Willie gave some insight into what they’ll be asking these two about.

“What are some systemic challenges and problems you’ve faced and what are some solutions to them," said Willie. "We want someone in the mindset and thinking when it comes to the challenges we have. I think that was addressed in those interviews, and that’s why we’re bringing them in as finalists, because we want to dive even further into those answers.”

The community can come talk with these two candidates on Monday, May 13 at 6 p.m. at Everbank Stadium.

The board will have one on ones with both candidates Tuesday before making the decision on May 23.
