Four people dead, one in critical condition after 'speeding excessively' on Jacksonville's Southside

JSO says a driver and four passengers of an Audi were eastbound on University Boulevard South near Terry Road when the driver lost control and hit a concrete pole.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Four people are dead and a fifth person is recovering at a Jacksonville hospital after a single-vehicle crash occurred in the Sans Souci area on Jacksonville's Southside Saturday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

JSO's Lieutenant Nassim Mana says at approximately 2:18 a.m., a driver and four passengers of a 2-door Audi were eastbound on University Boulevard South near Terry Road. He says the driver of the Audi was speeding excessively and failed to maintain control of the vehicle at the curve.

A fatal wreck happened 10 days ago on Aug. 26, in the same area of Saturday morning's crash where two people died after impacting a concrete pole and crashing into a Firehouse Subs.

Police say the vehicle crashed into a concrete pole before it caught on fire. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department says the fifth occupant of the vehicle and only survivor of the crash, is suffering life-threatening injuries.

JSO says they have not identified the deceased individuals.

Mana says no one else was involved or injured in the crash and that JSO detectives as well as the Medical Examiner's Office is on scene and conducting an investigation. The crash amounted to a total of 124 traffic fatalities in Duval County this year.

University Boulevard South from Terry Road to Barnhill Drive will remain closed for "a few more hours," police say. Please seek alternative routes and use caution if driving in the area.
