1 dead, 4 injured after semitruck catches fire in crash

HILLIARD, Fla. — One person is dead after a fiery crash involving a semitruck and a pickup truck Friday afternoon in Nassau County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened on U.S. 1 at Vintage Lane at about 2:20 p.m. Friday.

A semitruck, driven by 49-year-old Vero Beach man, was traveling south on U.S. 1. In front of the truck was a pickup truck driven by a 32-year-old man from Folkston, Georgia. The driver of the pickup was attempting a U-turn in front of the semitruck, which caused a collision.

The pickup slid to the right shoulder facing north. The semitruck traveled onto the median and hit a tree. After hitting the tree, the semitruck caught fire and was fully engulfed.

The driver of the semitruck was pronounced dead. The driver of the pickup truck, along with his three passengers that included two children, received minor injuries.
