Under totality for the solar eclipse in western New York

In the small town of Machias, New York, the chirping of crickets filled the air as totality moved overhead. Meteorologist Robert Speta witnessed the solar spectacle.

MACHIAS, N.Y. — In western New York, a blanket of clouds couldn't deter the enthusiasm of spectators who gathered to witness the path of totality during the Great American Solar Eclipse.

Hosted by Meteorologist Robert Speta, a watch party of people from across the area created a vibrant atmosphere of awe and wonder.

Local resident Oliver Stanbro said: "It was an amazing sight. If you showed me two photos, one of the eclipse and the other of nighttime, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference."

Such sentiments echoed throughout the crowd, with many noting the eerie darkness that enveloped the landscape and the emergence of nocturnal creatures, a common occurrence during eclipses.
