St. Johns County library sees more visitors ahead of Great American Eclipse

Thousands of eclipse shades were distributed to the public for Monday's solar event.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — While many people are looking for the perfect view of the Great American Eclipse, Northeast Floridians are going to the library.

Local librarians said this celestial event piqued the interest of people who want to know more about eclipses.

The main branch of the St. Augustine Library said they have been flooded with phone calls and visitors asking for eclipse shades. While the event is outdoors, librarians said people are coming indoors.

The libraries in St. Johns County started with 10,000 eclipse shades and then it trickled down to around 3,000.

They ran out completely on Monday. Librarians said they experienced an increase in visitors who do not normally attend the library.

For those who want to get a better view of the eclipse, the Ancient City Astronomy Club will be at the Anastasia Island branch. From there, visitors can check out the celestial event from the club's telescopes.

They will be around from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Librarians said they are seeing more enthusiasm for this rare occasion.
