Friendship Fountain renovation hits a snag, opening pushed back to July

A spokesperson with Build Up Downtown says delays with the audio system is holding up the grand re-opening.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Friendship Fountain - one of the many projects that was impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Construction was supposed to start right around the time restaurants were limiting capacity and schools sending kids home.

Here we are three years later, still not a whole lot to see.

However, it could be shooting off into the Jacksonville skyline again before too long.

"Really I didn't even know that was a fountain because it's always been blocked off," said Elisha Ammi while taking a break from the heat.

Ammi took his family for a stroll on the Riverwalk, and set up under a tree to take a break from a hot day.

One thing that would've cooled them off even better - the Friendship Fountain.

"Right now would be a perfect time," said Ammi. "It's warm out here. We're out here chilling. If it was open, it definitely would've been cool to see her play in the water and stuff like that."

But, it's not open, and it hasn't been open for years.

The city's renovation keeps chugging along - with the occasional tease of what it could be like.

It lit up blue one night in January as part of a test.

Laura Phillips Edgecombe with Build Up Downtown says it's only a matter of time until the fences come down.

"Originally, the city of Jacksonville was hoping to have the park open by Memorial Day weekend, but there have been some delays in the audio equipment," said Edgecombe.

The fountain will project a 15 minute light show every night timed to music

Since it's all one system, Edgecombe says they can't open the fountain until those speakers are in place.

The new timeline is to have the water pumping by the middle of July.

"If it's going to be done, it needs to be done right," said Edgecombe."

In the next three years, the city is also planning to bring a splash pad, where Ammi and his little girl will really be able to have some fun.

"Everything takes time, but I feel like once it gets up and going, it's going to be a good addition to the city," said Ammi.

The city is also adding a sidewalk, so there will be plenty of places for folks to stand to take it all in.
