UPDATE: St. Augustine City officials to discuss in May the possibility of July 4th fireworks

St. Augustine will work off what the governor’s phasing recommendations are as well as what other cities decide to do.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — The St. Augustine city manager John Regan said Tuesday afternoon the city is taking a "wait and see" stance as to whether it will have its annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration this year amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

This comes one day after the city commission initially agreed to cancel the fireworks.

Regan explained that he received some erroneous information from his staff which he presented to the city commission Monday night.

He said three nearby cities canceled their Fourth of July fireworks, which lead commissioners to cancel the St. Augustine fireworks. John Regan told First Coast News Tuesday afternoon, he has since learned that information is not accurate. While Flagler Beach has canceled the fireworks, Daytona Beach and Jacksonville Beach have not made a final decision yet.

Regan is suggesting the St. Augustine City Commission meet in late May to make a decision about the fireworks. He says St. Augustine will work off what the governor’s phasing recommendations are as well as what other cities decide to do.

He apologizes for giving the commission incorrect information. “I made a mistake.”
