'It's been senseless' | Residents frustrated following yet another shooting near Georgia State's campus

The RaceTrac gas station that recently closed is just right around the corner from the address of Saturday night's shooting.

ATLANTA — Atlanta Police are investigating after a man was shot near the Georgia State University campus Saturday night.

Officers were dispatched to 92 Piedmont Avenue, which is the address for Piedmont Central on-campus student housing at Georgia State, for a call of a person shot.

They found a man who had been shot in the butt when they got there. APD said the man was "alert, conscious and breathing" and taken to the hospital to be treated.

As of now, officers believe the incident occurred at "a separate and yet to be identified location" and that the man walked to 120 Piedmont Avenue to flag down a Georgia State officer who was there.

Gun violence near Georgia State's campus is not new. Just last month, the RaceTrac gas station located at 120 Piedmont Ave. NE closed its location due to the safety of store employees and the financial impact on the business.

It came after a man was shot and killed near the RaceTrac that previous weekend in February.

The RaceTrac gas station that recently closed is just right around the corner from the address of Saturday night's shooting.

Jessica Clarke, a student at Georgia State, said she's not scared anymore; she's numb.

"I saw the message they sent last night, but honestly, I ignored it because we get so many messages like that. I just added it to the list," she said about violence in the area.

As for that RaceTrac location that shut down, Clarke said it hasn't made a difference.

“Since the closure, I’ve seen the same number of people," she added.

The frustration is echoed by Freddrena Wright, who works and lives in the area.

“It's been senseless," she said. "It seems like it’s a younger generation of people doing crimes out here.”
