Riverfront Plaza nets $3.5M permit for cafe shell building at former site of Jacksonville Landing

The city is planning a cafe at the space as construction continues on Independent Drive. A tenant has not been announced.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A local contractor has received a $3.5 million permit to begin construction of a cafe space at Riverfront Plaza.

The Haskell Company was issued the permit to build a 5,141-square-foot cafe on Tuesday. Sitting on 7.5 acres, it's another piece of the new Riverfront Plaza that is replacing the Jacksonville Landing, which was demolished in 2019.

The first phase of the project ramped up in January after beginning in August, sans a certain LERP statue. Phase 1A started in July 2023 with the removal of a portion of Independent Drive. Along with construction of the playground and splash pad, Phase 1B will also include the infrastructure work along the riverwalk and bulkhead.

Firm Perkins & Will is the architect.

Phase 1 is expected to be completed in 2025. Independent Drive will still be open and the water taxi will be operational.
