Note from First Coast News Director Joe Inderhees
To those who missed the last four minutes of Dateline and 20/20 because of news coverage, I understand why you are upset and I will not try to convince you that our decision was correct. I do want to explain our thinking in starting our newscast early.
Our first priority is public safety.
At the time, we had not yet heard whether law enforcement was concerned about a shooter on the loose in the area of Terry Parker High.
Also, this was the first time we were hearing from anyone with official knowledge of the condition of the teen victim.
These are the top two reasons why we wanted to take the news conference live and start our newscast early.
