Look out for rip currents during the holiday weekend at Jacksonville Beach

From rip currents to dredging, some things you need to remember if heading to the beach.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the beaches on the First Coast are expected to be crowded.

It's important to remember a few key safety tips to ensure a fun and safe holiday. One of the most crucial pieces of advice is to swim near a lifeguard station.

Let's hear from some of our dedicated lifeguards on how to stay safe.

Capt. Ron Emhaiser emphasized the importance of swimming near lifeguards: "If you are going to go into the water, swim near a lifeguard. They are there to help you, advise you, and keep you safe in the ocean. Also, consider the weather. It’s going to be hot all three days, and many people coming out may not be used to being outdoors, so you may not be used to the heat."

This weekend, there's an additional area to avoid due to ongoing dredging, Emhaiser continued: "I should mention the dredging. There's a large area on the south end of Jacksonville Beach that you should avoid if you can. From 12th Avenue where the steel pipe makes landfall going southbound, it’s not the best place to go.

Although it is open technically from 12th to 15th, there are many hazards, and it’s hard for us to get to you with the equipment in the way. Further south from 15th to 22nd Avenue South, that area is completely closed, so please respect the construction project."

While the waves might be down a bit this weekend, Emhaiser warns against complacency.

"On days when there are yellow flags and the surf has come down, the rip current can take you by surprise and is a bit more subtle. So, once again, it’s important to note where the lifeguard is on duty."

Emhaiser also noted over holiday weekends during large crowds they often receive calls about missing children who may have hot lost in crowd. He mentioned to have someone in your group always keeping an eye on children and make sure your children know your phone number so they if they approach a lifeguard they can get back to their group as quickly as safely as possible.

To stay cool and hydrated:

  • Bring plenty of cold drinks.
  • Avoid alcohol, which is not allowed on the beach.
  • Seek shade, but avoid heading under the pier as it can be dangerous due to fishing equipment and rip currents.
