Shands Bridge to close over three weekends in a row starting Jan. 26-Feb. 9

The bridge connecting Clay and St. Johns counties will be completely rebuilt as part of the First Coast Expressway by 2030.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Update: FDOT repairs finished ahead of schedule, and the Shands Bridge will not close the weekend of Feb. 9.

Starting next weekend will see three consecutive weekend closures of the Shands Bridge planned to allow for grating replacement.

 According to the FDOT, bridge closures are planned during the following times, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting:

  • Friday, Jan. 26 at 9 p.m. through Monday, Jan. 29 at 4 a.m.
  • Friday, Feb. 2 at 9 p.m. through Monday, Feb. 5 at 4 a.m.
  • Friday, Feb. 9 at 9 p.m. through Monday, Feb. 12 at 4 a.m. (if necessary)

During the closures, traffic will detour via State Road 13, I-295 and U.S. 17. State Road 16 on either side of the bridge will remain open to local traffic only.

 Commuters are asked to take the Buckman Bridge.

The bridge will be completely rebuilt as part of the First Coast Expressway. The $595 million project started early last year and is expected to finish by 2030.
