In the pre-dawn hours of Nov. 8, two women died in a wrong-way crash on the Hart Bridge.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Drivers who take the Hart Bridge will notice new signage in the area.

In the pre-dawn hours of Nov. 8, two women died in a wrong-way crash on the Hart Bridge. While the official cause is not yet known, the the construction site happening at the base of the bridge may have constributed to the crash.

An SUV was traveling eastbound on the Hart Bridge from Gator Bowl Boulevard in the westbound lanes of travel at 12:19 a.m., an FHP report says. An out-of-service Jacksonville Transportation Authority bus was traveling westbound in the left lane when the SUV crashed into the front of the bus, according to the report.

Both the driver and passenger of the SUV, a 28-year-old Jacksonville woman and a 26-year-old Jacksonville woman, were pronounced dead at UF Health Jacksonville. The driver of the bus was not hurt, and no one else was listed on board the bus in the FHP report.

On a Go Fund Me page for one of the victims, the family says the crash was the result of a “confusing bridge entry.”

The construction is part of a realignment and tally rand connector project. It is expected to be completed next year.

On Saturday morning, a First Coast News phptograph took pictures of news signs in the construction area.
