FHP: Woman killed after 5 vehicles crash on I-295 near Old St. Augustine Road

The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash began after a 61-year-old woman driving a sedan failed to slow down for a vehicle in front of her.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 61-year-old woman is dead after multiple vehicles crashed on Interstate 295 near Old St. Augustine Road Wednesday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Around 5:30 p.m., a sedan the 61-year-old woman was driving was heading north on I-295, south of Old St. Augustine Road on the inside lane of traffic, while a second sedan was driving directly in front of the vehicle, an FHP crash report states.

The driver of the second sedan slowed down for traffic in front of her, and the sedan traveling behind failed to slow down and crashed into the back of the vehicle, FHP said.

After crashing, the sedan driven by the 61-year-old woman merged into the center lane of traffic. At the same time, a third sedan traveling behind the woman's vehicle during the crash also merged into the center lane.

The third sedan then crashed into the back of the first sedan and it was redirected back into the high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes.

The sedan was left in front of an SUV traveling in the outside HOV lane, and the front of the SUV crashed into the driver's side of the sedan, causing it to rotate counterclockwise.

A fifth vehicle traveling behind the SUV then crashed into the sedan, the report states.

The woman driving the sedan died in the crash and the other four drivers involved in the crash were not hurt, according to FHP.

The crash blocked traffic on I-295 as emergency crews responded to the scene.
