10 takeaways as Jaguars return to EverBank Field for training camp

The Jaguars returned to EverBank Field with veterans filling up the meeting rooms on Wednesday.

The team returned after more than a month of off-time, starting training camp with everyone in attendance, including three players who were placed on injury lists.

To kick off the start of training camp for veterans, the Jaguars made head coach Gus Bradley, wide receiver Allen Robinson and linebacker Paul Posluszny available to the media.

Here are 10 takeaways from the trio of press conferences:

1. Gus Bradley is looking svelte. The Jaguars head coach came back conditioned, unintentionally setting an example for his players to strive for. Bradley looked like he had lost a solid amount of girth, though he refused to say how many pounds he dropped. He said it wasn't his intention to set the tone for his players, but that he wanted to practice what he preached to his team before they left for their break in between minicamp and training camp.

2. Positional versatility will be a key storyline for several players during training camp. Along with position changes for Ryan Davis, Neal Sterling and Brandon Linder, other players will be playing multiple positions as the team prepares to increase its versatility on the game day roster.

Bradley says first round pick Jalen Ramsey will play boundary cornerback and nickel back, covering the slot in those situations. He also said that battling left tackles, Luke Joeckel and Kelvin Beachum, will both play tackle and guard during training.

As previously noted, Davis and Dan Skuta will be playing "LOTTO," which is a combination of the Leo and Otto positions. When asked about the timeshare at "LOTTO," Bradley mentioned that assistant linebackers coach Scottie Hazelton was working exclusively with the position to focus on pass rush and general responsibilities.

3. Rookie cornerback Mike Hilton was placed on the active non-football injury list on Tuesday. Bradley refused to say what the injury was, but did say the condition wasn't alarming. The training staff put Hilton through conditioning drills on Wednesday.

4. Bradley addressed the Greg Hardy visit during his press conference.

"I know Dave [Caldwell] addressed that with you guys and went through the philosophy behind it," Bradley said. "I can tell you for me, we're always competing, we're always trying to learn. Our personnel department does a great job bringing guys in. I looked at it as more of a chance to learn about a player they brought in. I think there are some [issues] that we got to discuss, but we talked about our central theme is 'always competing,' we're always trying to find ways to improve this roster. Everybody has got a story, it was opportunity to learn about that story."

5. Bradley noted the team is heading into training camp in "great shape." He said big free agent signee Malik Jackson lost over a dozen pounds during the break. He said he was "extremely excited" by the way his players took on the 39-day challenge set in place by the coaching staff in June.

6. Robinson is seemingly fine with the pressure that comes with following up a Pro Bowl season. The third-year receiver brushed off the suggestion that the added expectations for him have caused any stress. In fact, Robinson said this offseason has been pretty similar to last year.

He says he wants to improve his route running and become more efficient, but he isn't concerned with how other teams gameplan for him. He knows added coverage may come but he says he isn't stressing the idea.

“That is out my control," Robinson said. "If it happens, it happens. I still have to go out there and work the same technique, work to get open and make plays.”

7. Robinson's press conference dug deep into the wide receiver depth chart. Robinson fielded questions on several of his teammates, including fellow wide receivers Rashad Greene and Marqise Lee.

"[Lee] is a guy who can stretch the field," Robinson said. "Teams have to do a lot of game-planning around him.”

Robinson thinks Greene has grown a lot as a wide receiver. He has been impressed with the Florida State product's growth since joining the team.

"As far as how he has come along understanding, I don’t want to say defenses, because I think he is a very highly intelligent guy, but you have to find your niche when you come into the NFL is far as how a certain system is built around you," Robinson said. "I think he has adapted to that really well.”

Robinson added that Greene's ability to play in multiple spots has helped the young receiver and his team.

“I think he is very versatile," Robinson said. "Everyone has seen him on special teams, but in our offense, being able to run a choice route and different things like that and really occupying the slot. I think he has done a great job of that.”

8. Posluszny understands what his role is moving forward and what second round pick Myles Jack means to the franchise. The veteran has admitted to himself and the media that he has limited playing time left in his career and his goal is to help the team as much and as long as he can.

“I think the mindset will be the same in the fact that I want to do everything I can to be an asset for this team and to play at my highest level," Posluszny said.

"I also realize the situation where Myles is, he is the future linebacker of the organization and I feel like it’s part of my job as a veteran guy to help bring him along as fast as we can because we need him on the field. He’s going to be a great player. We got to see a little bit of him at the end of minicamp. So it will be an exciting training camp to get him up to speed and get him to learn everything as fast as we can because he’s an asset to the group and we’ll need him out there.”

9. The offseason program highlighted the new found aggression of the defense. New defensive coordinator Todd Wash is clearly ready to attack. Posluszny thinks the new attitude will allow the team to accomplish their goals.

"Coach Wash is going to have a great plan for us," Posluszny said. "We learned that in OTAs that we’re going to have a set plan, we’re going to be aggressive in what we do. I’m sure he’s talked about tighter coverages throughout, which is more of an aggressive style. So that’s going to be exciting to have that [and] to know that we have the ability to be an aggressive-attacking defense when we want to.”

10. While the talk of the linebacker group has been Jack, Jordan Tripp has quietly put together a strong offseason for the Jaguars. Tripp arrived in the middle of last season after being cut by the Miami Dolphins. The third-year linebacker has since played all three linebacker positions for the Jaguars and has taken a leadership role with the second team unit.

Bradley noted that Tripp and Jack trained together in Seattle during the break, improving their knowledge and comfort in the defense. Posluszny has noted Tripp's eagerness to learn and his willingness to contribute in anyway he can.

"I think mainly because you see how he is out on the field and the fact he’s able to learn multiple positions," Posluszny said. "He’s almost at the point now where any linebacker position we can put him in there when we need that, which is a great asset to the team. He’s extremely smart, hard-working, gifted athlete. And he has said time and time again that he’ll do whatever he can just to be a part of this team and to add value to it and he has shown that over and over again.”

Bonus note: Jacksonville native, Florida State alum and former New York Jets running back Leon Washington will join the Jaguars as a training camp coaching intern.
