Mayor Donna Deegan proclaiming March 10th as "Leon Barrett Day" in recognition of his significant contributions.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In a momentous occasion for the Riverside High School community, the football stadium has been bestowed with a new name to commemorate the contributions of Leon Barrett.

Attending the ceremony, Leon Barrett, a distinguished figure in the community, graduated from Robert Lee High School in 1961 and subsequently embarked on a teaching career at the institution in August 1996. Over the course of 37 years, he dedicated his heart and knowledge to the students and staff, witnessing the transformation of the high school into what is now known as Riverside High School.

During his tenure, Barrett actively engaged in coaching various sports, including football, track, golf, swim, wrestling, baseball, and softball. His significant involvement has left an indelible mark on the Generals community.

As a charming anecdote, it is noteworthy that Leon Barrett coined the nickname "the backyard" for the football stadium.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan has officially declared tomorrow, March 10th, as "Leon Barrett Day," further solidifying his impact on the community.
