Jacksonville has local connection to 'Selma' movie

The children of the architect of the civil rights marches believe Selma the movie will give new insight into 1964

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Before Ferguson, Missouri and before the protests in Staten Island, New York, there was Selma, Alabama. And now there is Selma the movie.

"I think that this movie is so critical," said Chevara Orrin.

Orrin is one of James Bevels children; Bevel is one of the architects of the civil rights marches in Selma.

"There are 15 of us, 9 mothers between us," she said.

She said her relationship with her father was challenging until his latter days; Bevel died in 2008.

"I certainly respect the work that he did and the path that he blazed," she said. "I find myself often walking [the same path] here in Jacksonville."

She is now a community activist, pushing for the Human Rights Ordinance; pushing for better relations between the black and the Jewish community.

"His footprints are all over the work of the Civil Rights movement," said Orrin.

History claims Bevel's masterpiece is the Children Crusade; encouraging children to be part of the marches. Orrin said her family members have seen the movie and describe it as a fair but found two things are missing.

"Songs of the movement, which were so critical and pivotal," she said. "I've been singing freedom songs all of my life, and also the tenets of non violent actions which was the bases of what they were doing."

Hip-hop artist and actor Common portrays James Bevel in the movie. Even though she is proud of her father's accomplishments, she is also devastated and disgusted by his ugly past.

"I feel that way still," she said.

Bevel was convicted of molesting one of his daughters. Orrin said she is one of his victims.

"It certainly does not at all excuse him from the horrific crimes that he committed against me and the other women and girls but it also does not detract from the work that he did in the civil rights movement," said Orrin.

Bevel died from pancreatic cancer.

The movie Selma will hit select theaters December 25th and on January 9th nationwide.
