DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A Georgia couple is facing child neglect charges after allegedly passing out drunk on Daytona Beach, according to multiple reports.
A 911 caller contacted authorities on March 16 to say a couple had fallen asleep on the beach after having "too much to drink" and that their kids had run off, the Miami Herald reports.
Volusia County deputies reportedly arrived to find 27-year-old Timothy Stephens and his fiancée, 27-year-old Alyssia Langley, asleep on a towel surrounded by children's toys and empty alcohol containers.
After multiple attempts by deputies to nudge and yell at the couple, they eventually woke up "in a state of confusion," according to the Miami Herald.
That's when deputies asked where the couple's children were.
According to news station WESH, Stephens could not specifically say where the 5-year-old and 7-year-old were.
Deputies led the couple to a nearby pool where the kids were swimming unsupervised, the news outlet said. The children were unharmed.
The sheriff's office said Stephens attempted to run away from deputies during questioning but tripped and landed on the sand, leading him to be transported to the hospital.
Stephens was arrested and charged with having alcohol on the beach, child neglect and escape. Langley was also arrested and charged with child neglect.
The Miami Herald reports that the children were taken to a family resource center where a relative picked them up and brought them back to Georgia.
"I just can't imagine that you could be so reckless and negligent and just don't really give a (expletive) that you could get that ossified, that you don't know where you're at, you're completely passed out, and anything can happen to those kids, anything in the world," Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said, according to WESH.
