MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. — Florida authorities are investigating a Brightline train crash just two days after a person was killed in a separate Brightline train crash at the same intersection.
According to multiple news reports, two people were killed in Friday's crash, which happened when the train collided with a vehicle on the tracks. Police said the car's driver and one passenger died.
Both crashes happened at South Harbor City Boulevard and W.H. Jackson Street in Melbourne.
In Wednesday's crash, the driver, 62-year-old Charles Julian Phillips, and three of his passengers, including a 9-year-old, were injured, WKMG reports.
In February 2023, two people were killed when their SUV was struck by a Brightline high-speed commuter train in South Florida. A pedestrian was hit and killed in an apparent suicide in September 2023.
At least 90 deaths have been connected to Brightline since it began operations in July 2017, running from West Palm Beach to Miami.
None of the deaths involving Brightline have been found to be the railroad’s fault. Most have been suicides, pedestrians who tried to run across the tracks ahead of a train or drivers who maneuvered around crossing gates rather than wait.
