USS George Washington stops in Jacksonville before traveling to Japan

More than 3,000 sailors will travel the southern seas before reaching Japan.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The USS George Washington made its way to the First Coast before it leaves for Japan. For a couple of months, thousands of sailors will get to experience South America and all it has to offer. Before they leave to see the world, they stopped at the Mayport Naval Station as a checkpoint. 

The Naval Aircraft Carrier and its crew will travel to countries such as: Brazil, Chile and Peru. More than 3,000 sailors will travel the southern sea as a part of their 2024 deployment. Part of the commute includes showcasing Washington to allied nations. This is the third deployment for Washington. 

Officials told First Coast News, crew members should expect to leave, Wednesday.
