St. Johns River Ferry removed from service 'until further notice' for repairs

It was determined that a submerged rope had gotten tangled up in the propeller system, causing damage to the area.

The St. Johns River Ferry Service will be out of commission "until further notice" for repairs to its propeller, according to a Jacksonville Transportation Authority release on Thursday.

As the ferry was docking at the Fort George station, the operations team noticed an unusual noise. The ferry was then docked at the Mayport station for further inspection.

It was determined that a submerged rope had gotten tangled up in the propeller system, causing damage to the area.

The ferry will be taken out of use until the repairs are complete. After the repairs, the ferry will be inspected by the JTA and U.S. Coast Guard to ensure it is "safe for use by our customers and ferry operations team."

The St. Johns River Ferry connects the north and south ends of Florida State Road A1A in Duval County and links Mayport Village and Fort George Island via a 0.9-mile voyage across the St. Johns River.

A spokesperson for JTA said that as of the end of June, 263,057 people had used the ferry, along with 146,335 vehicles since the beginning of the year.
