Payne Avenue Walk: Homes replace crime ridden apartments

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- There's new hope and a new look for a Northside neighborhood that will soon see homes replace a crime ridden apartment complex.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- There's new hope and a new look for a Northside neighborhood that will soon see homes replace a crime ridden apartment complex.

Payne Avenue Walk is the name of the development at Payne Avenue and 11th Street where 12 new homes will go up.

On Friday, Mayor Lenny Curry did the ceremonial knock down of the 38 apartments that city leaders say contributed to blight and crime.

"Block by block, zip code by zip code," said Curry before the groundbreaking ceremony referring to his commitment to rebuild neighborhoods.

The new project will take 18 months to complete with homes in the $100,000 range being built. The homeowners will receive assistance in transitioning into their homes.

Just recently in the same area of Jacksonville the city began installing LED street lights to enhance public safety.

City crews have also been working to clear debris from the area.
