Open burns happening throughout the First Coast

If you see smoke throughout parts of the First Coast, don't be alarmed. There are five controlled burns scheduled today, according to the Florida Forest Service.

If you see smoke throughout parts of the First Coast, don't be alarmed. There are five open burns scheduled today, according to the Florida Forest Service (FFS).

The areas that will be burned are as follows:

  • Baker County: 3,000 acres about 7 miles south of I-10 and 5 miles west of CR-250 by the U.S. Forest Service.
  • Clay County: 122 acres near Camp Blanding, about a mile north of SR-16 and 6 miles west of SR-21 by the Department of Military Affairs.
  • Bradford County: 10 acres 1 mile west of SR-16 and 1/4 mile south of CR-225 by a private land owner
  • Nassau County: 17 acres of Cary State Forest, 1/2 mile east of US-301 just north of Motes Road by the Florida Forest Service
  • Nassau County: 30 acres about 2 miles west of FL CR-121 and 1 mile north of Tompkins Landing Road by a private landowner

In order to conduct an open burn, FFS must approve it first.
