Man dies in JSO custody after medical issues prior to arrest

Leroy Beckett, 66, had been in jail since July. It's the third inmate death in 2024.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man who was an inmate at Duval County Jail died in custody Wednesday, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said in a release.

Leroy Beckett, 66, was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment on Feb. 9, the agency said Thursday. The sheriff's office said Beckett had had multiple prior medical issues and remained under doctors’ care until his death Wednesday.

Beckett was originally taken into custody July 11, 2023, on two charges of selling cocaine.

The Medical Examiner’s Office determination of death will follow an autopsy of Beckett, JSO said.

It's the third inmate death in JSO custody reported this year. Kiara Lapearl Reid died of a medical emergency Feb. 4. Gregory Norton died of a "continuing medical issue" on Jan. 31, according to JSO.
