14-year-old dead, 13-year-old hospitalized after LaVilla crash

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says there were no indicators of impairment among the drivers involved in the crash, as it was simply a "tragic accident" Thursday.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Two teenagers were involved in a LaVilla crash Thursday, in which one died, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

JSO's Sergeant Hungerford says the crash happened around 12:49 p.m. in the 100 block of South Myrtle Street. He says a white minivan was northbound on Myrtle Street behind a dump truck. That's when the truck slowed down to make a right turn onto Harper Street.

"As the dump truck slowed down, the people in the minivan advised that two young men, teenagers, sped by on the right hand side on a minibike, either on the shoulder or on the sidewalk, actually both, and collided with the passenger side of that dump truck," Hungerford said.

An unidentified 14-year-old who was the passenger on the minibike, died after being taken to a local hospital by first responders with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, police say. Hungerford says an unidentified 13-year-old who was the driver of the minibike, suffered minor injuries in the crash and is in stable condition.

JSO says the minibike shouldn't have been in the road because it was an "off-highway vehicle."

"This particular one was not licensed to be on the roadway and it requires signals... right, left turn signals, a headlight and a taillight, and it didn't have any of those features," Hungerford said. "Also, that requires to be tagged and it [was] not."

The sheriff's office also says the dump truck stopped on top of the minibike but, the teens were ejected from the bike before that happened.

"The driver's here and cooperative and there are no indicators of impairment," Hungerford said. "It's just simply a tragic accident."

Hungerford says this crash marked as the 168th traffic fatality in Duval County this year, as he further stated that the 100 block of South Myrtle Street will "remain closed, probably for another hour while detectives continue their investigation."
