Two dead after fiery wrong-way crash on I-95

The crash happened around 3 a.m. after 23-year-old Mary Russ of St. Augustine was driving north along the southbound lanes of I-95.

Two people are dead after a fiery wrong-way crash shut down the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Old St. Augustine Road for hours Friday morning.

The crash happened around 3 a.m. after 23-year-old Mary Russ of St. Augustine was driving north along the southbound lanes of I-95. The Florida Highway Patrol said she struck the front-end of a van, causing both vehicles to flip and overturn. The other vehicle also became instantly engulfed in flames as a result.

Both Russ and the other driver died at the scene.

FHP shut down the right-center and outside lanes were closed for pavement repair. Lanes reopened about 11 hours after the crash around 1:43 p.m.

At this time, it is unclear why Russ was driving on the wrong side of the road.
