JSO: Man dead after dispute led to shooting in parking lot of business on Jacksonville's Westside

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says there were "probably over 100 people" in the parking lot at the time of the incident.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man died Monday morning after a dispute in a parking lot of a business on Jacksonville's Westside led to a shooting where "multiple shots were fired," according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

JSO's Sergeant Highfill says around 1:10 a.m., officers responded to the 5200 block of Normandy Boulevard in reference to gunfire. He says a "short time later," the man arrived at a local hospital with a life-threatening gunshot wound, as he died there.

"What we know now is there was some type of dispute in the parking lot of a business, in which resulted in an exchange of gunfire," Highfill told First Coast News. "The relationship of the individuals involved in the dispute and the reason for the dispute is still under investigation."

Police say witnesses drove the man to the hospital, as they are being interviewed along with several people who were at the scene when officers arrived. Multiple vehicles were struck by gunfire, too, police also said.

Highfill says the sheriff's office has identified a suspect in the incident, described as a Black man who was wearing all black clothing at the time.

Businesses in the parking lot where the incident occurred include Charlie's Liquor, Normandy Arcade and 'Charlie's Hookah Lounge.'

When First Coast News asked Highfill if there was an event at the hookah lounge at the time the dispute and shooting happened, he said: "Pretty much on the weekends, this place has a lot of individuals that show up. There was probably over 100 people or more here at the time of the incident."

Highfill confirmed there were security guards present in the parking lot at the time of the incident.

"Based on our initial investigation, they did not return any fire and they were not involved in the incident," Highfill said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call JSO's non-emergency number at 904-630-0500 or to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
