Police: Four adults detained after 16-year-old was found shot to death in Jacksonville's New Town area

Officers responded to the 1500 block of West 2nd Street at approximately 11:20 a.m.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Update: The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of 27-year-old Damon Wilson on manslaughter charges in connection with the shooting death of 16-year-old Layla D. Johnson on Sunday.

A 16-year-old girl is dead and four people are detained Friday following a shooting in Jacksonville's New Town area, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office told First Coast News in a police briefing Friday afternoon.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Lieutenant Adam Blinn says officers responded to the 1500 block of West 2nd Street in reference to a death investigation at approximately 11:20 a.m. He says four people including the unidentified girl, were inside of a home on the street when she was shot.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department arrived at the scene shortly after and pronounced the girl dead at the scene, Blinn says. JSO did not release the identity of the girl, nor the people detained.

Blinn says all four people detained are adults and were taken downtown to the Police Memorial Building to be interviewed. He further clarified that the three people in the home besides the girl at the time of the shooting, are detained, as well as "somebody who was in the area who might have some information for us."

"At this point in time, we don't know the circumstances of the incident or the relationship of the people involved," Blinn said. "Because of this, we are currently classifying this case as pending. What I can say, is that right now we do believe it is an isolated incident, we don't think that there's any additional threat to the community."

Police are currently working to obtain search warrants to execute a search on homes in the area, according to Blinn. JSO is investigating the shooting along with the Medical Examiner's Office and State Attorney's Office.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call JSO's non-emergency number at 904-630-0500 or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
