Palatka soapbox team heads to Iowa for Redbull Race

The Swamp Monkeys are ready to take first place once again at the race on Saturday.

PALATKA, Fla. — The Swamp Monkeys, a group of friends from Palatka, have been working the last few weeks on their latest soapbox car.

“Box racing has been around for a long time. I mean kids have been building cars and pushing cars down a hill for a long time," Team Captain, Justin Morris said.

The team is made up of five guys, Justin Morris, Matt Harris, Josh Sevearance, Evan MacClellan, and Adam Deputy.

“We’re overgrown kids with adult money," said Morris. "Two of us are engineers, one is a surfer board manufacturer and the other guys have heavy arts and design backgrounds, so we’re getting different perspectives from the whole team it all comes together."

This will be the fourth Redbull Soapbox Race the team has participated in.

“It's basically just throw-together contraptions that roll down a hill but each one of them has to have a theme," Morris said.

The team is scored on how creative their theme is, a 30-minute skit they perform ahead of the race, and of course how fast they get down the track.

“We’re all from Florida we try to keep some sort of affiliate, some sort of tie to Florida so we’re taking a little Florida flavor whenever we go out to these races," Morris said.
