Jaguars release wide receiver Allen Hurns

Jacksonville will save $7 million in salary cap space by cutting Hurns.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jaguars released veteran wide receiver Allen Hurns on Tuesday.

Jacksonville will save $7 million in salary cap space by cutting Hurns. The wide receiver signed a four-year, $40 million extension during the 2016 offseason. The guaranteed money in his contract ran out after the first two seasons of the deal.

Hurns was one of the NFL's best undrafted free-agent finds of the last decade, as he produced 1,708 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns during the first two seasons of his career. However, the last two seasons of his Jacksonville tenure were marred by hamstring and ankle injuries.

Hurns missed six games last season due to a nagging ankle injury. While he was out of the lineup, then-rookies, Keelan Cole and Dede Westbrook, were able to step up in his place. The young duo will likely be asked to replace his production again this season.

The Jaguars are in a state of flux at the wide receiver position. With Hurns and Allen Robinson out of the picture, Marqise Lee is the lone returning veteran wide receiver from the lauded 2014 NFL Draft class.

Lee signed a long-term deal with the Jaguars during the first day of free agency. His return and the addition of former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Donte Moncrief allowed for the Jaguars to move on from Hurns.

The Jaguars currently have Lee, Moncrief, Westbrook, Cole, Jaydon Mickens, Rashad Greene, Shane Wynn, Tevaun Smith and Lamar Atkins under contract at wide receiver.
