Charges dropped against Southside pediatric dentist

A former Southside pediatric dentist who faced child abuse accusations from nearly 120 victims is no longer facing criminal charges.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A former Southside pediatric dentist who faced child abuse accusations from nearly 120 victims is no longer facing criminal charges.

Dr. Howard Schneider was arrested in 2015 after several parents came forward and accused Schneider of hurting their children during dental procedures. He closed his practice on University Boulevard that year due to the claims.

Schneider was also accused of making millions while harming his child patients from low-income families. He was charged with 11 counts of felony Medicaid fraud and one count of scheme to defraud. He was facing 19 years in prison.

In 2016, Schneider was deemed incompetent to stand trial. Two doctors who evaluated the now 81-year-old said he might have suffered from dementia. As a result, the State Attorney's Office dropped the charges because of his "deteriorating mental condition."
