One person died Saturday afternoon in a crash involving two vehicles and four motorcycles, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Motorcyclist Tony Lewis Mead, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene on US-41, south of East Levy Street, FHP said.

FHP said the incident started at around 2:45 p.m. as a Kia Soul and Chevy Silverado traveled south on US-41. A group of Harley Davidson's traveling north attempted to pass another vehicle heading north. Three of the motorcyclists failed to overtake the vehicle and wound up crashing into the Kia Soul, FHP said.

One motorcycle struck the Chevy Silverado, causing it to head off the roadway, FHP said.

FHP said four of the people involved in the crash was taken to Shands UF Health in Gainesville, two by helicopter and two by ambulance.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
