Former All-American defensive end Hunter Dimick transitioning to fullback on Jaguars' practice squad

Undrafted rookie Hunter Dimick is taking a leap of faith with a position change.

Players at the bottom of NFL rosters will do anything to receive playing time.

Whether it means standing out on special teams or completely switching positions, fringe players are looking to find their way onto the field.

Former University of Utah pass rusher Hunter Dimick is one of those players. The four-year college starter is currently on the Jaguars' practice squad.

Despite being Utah's all-time sacks leader, Dimick was unable to earn an active roster spot during training camp and the preseason.

Stuck behind a talented group of Jaguars defensive linemen, Dimick's shot at the 53-man roster was slim. Following final cuts, Dimick signed with the Jacksonville practice squad, looking to hone his skills with some added coaching.

That opportunity came with another: a position change.

Dimick is currently cross-training at the fullback position. He was approached by running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley during a practice session earlier in the season.

With nothing to lose, Dimick jumped at the challenge and he has been working with the running backs ever since.

"It's been a good transition so far," Dimick said earlier this week. "I've got a lot of footwork to work on. Coach Wheatley has been absolutely awesome to work with."

Dimick has a role model on the active roster. Veteran fullback Tommy Bohanon has been showing the rookie how to play the position.

"I've watched Tommy a lot," Dimick said. "He's a great dude to learn from, very helpful. Some guys get annoyed when younger guys ask for help but Tommy's been great with that so between watching him and asking for help, that's helped me improve a bunch."

Despite the move to fullback, Dimick still gets the itch to pass rush. He is still getting reps on the defensive line.

"Oh yeah, it's what I do," Dimick said about pass rushing. "But if fullback is the way I can contribute to the team, then that's where I'll be."

While he would prefer to be on the Jaguars' active roster, Dimick's work on the practice squad has been beneficial. It has allowed the rookie to transition into a new role without the pressure of being thrown into a live game situation.

He is learning. He is improving. He is taking advantage of the extra prep time.

"Obviously, I'd rather be out there playing this year but apparently I'm not ready for that so I've been taking practice squad very seriously," Dimick said. "I'm trying to take in every rep at three-technique, [defensive] end and fullback. Just improve in any way that I can."
