JACKSONVILLE, FL -- A mother who was shot at her work Friday morning has died from her injuries.
Police say Floacia Brookins was shot as she walked into work at Crowley in Talleyrand around 6 a.m. Friday.
Investigators say the man who shot her killed himself during a standoff at a home on the Northside Friday afternoon.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says SWAT teams found James Lawson Williams III, dead of a gunshot wound in the home on Oaklawn Road, which is near Dunn Avenue and Armsdale Road.
Williams had barricaded himself inside the home for several hours following the shooting of his ex-girlfriend in Talleyrand.
On Tuesday family of Brookins, including her daughter, gathered at a home on the northside to comfort each other.
Family says Brookins and Williams had an abusive, rocky relationship for more than 10 years.
The tragedy has put the spotlight on issues women's shelters like The Hubbard House deal with every.
Hubbard House CEO Ellen Siler says only eight percent of the women killed by domestic violence in Jacksonville over the last ten years ever took out a restraining order or called a shelter.
She says a facility like the Hubbard House can give women a plan of action to stay safe at a difficult time.
"Leaving can be a very dangerous time. If you are going to leave we want to help you plan the safest way to do it. If you are going to end a relationship we want to help you plan the safest way to do it," says Siler.
Ten women were killed in Jacksonville last year by an abusive partner.
