JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Army Specialist Isaiah Calloway is among the latest casualties in the war on terror in Afghanistan.
The Department of Defense Friday said Calloway died in Marah, Afghanistan, from injuries suffered when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire during combat operations.
Calloway served with the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, Hohenfels, Germany.
He was 23 years old and graduated from Englewood High School in 2002.
Master Sergeant Leonard Romain is an JROTC instructor at Englewood who says Calloway was, "one in a million."
Romain talks of a young cadet who proudly walked the campus in uniform. Calloway was also a drill team commander.
When asked about the character of Calloway, a choked up Romain answered, "He was one of the best, whatever he did. He did it good, did to his utmost."
Calloway is survived by his wife and three young children who live in Jacksonville.
