ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Tropical Storm Ida is moving north through the Gulf of Mexico, but she has already had a major impact on the First Coast.

The St. Johns County Veterans Day ceremony has been canceled; the Army is citing weather and safety concerns.

The event was scheduled to be held at St. Francis Special Events Field Wednesday.

Neither event will be rescheduled.

The Florida National Guard is St. Augustine has activated its planning cells and has alerted its units as the tropical storm draws nearer to land.

The activation follows on the heels of Gov. Charlie Crist's emergency declaration Monday morning.

"It's important for the people of Florida to know the citizen Soldiers and Airmen of the Florida National Guard are prepared to respond to this storm as assigned by the Florida Division of Emergency Management," said Maj. Gen. Douglas Burnett, the Adjutant General of Florida.
