JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says 18-year veteran officer Eric Long shot a suspect several times when he ran out of the back of a Family Dollar store carrying a small caliber handgun after a robbery attempt.

The suspect was identified Sunday morning as 31-year-old Awar Kareen Browder of Jacksonville by JSO Director Dwain Senterfitt. "The suspect has a lengthy criminal record including drug charges, he is a sexual offender and a convicted felon. He is at a local hospital with serious injuries but they are not life threatening," Senterfitt said.

Two officers were at the rear of the building when they saw a suspect running out of the building with a gun in his right hand. Long fired several times at the suspect says Senterfitt.

"The handgun was recovered at the scene as well as a mask, he was masked while inside. He was threatening employees with the gun and ordered the manger to open the safe." says Senterfitt. He did not know if the suspect made away with any money.

The aunt of one Family Dollar employee told First Coast News her nephew called his girlfriend during the robbery and left his phone on, the girlfriend then called police.
