ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL -- Instead of "trick or treat" this halloween, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office is using Operation No Treats to make sure there are no tricks.

Operation No Treats is part of the county's plan to keep children safe from sex offenders and sexual predators as they enjoy halloween activities.

Detectives are going throughout the county visiting sex offenders, making sure they are aware of the new ordinances and making sure they live where they say they do.

On halloween, the offenders will not be allowed to participate in trick or treating at their homes.  They may not wear any costumes or turn on any outside lighting, and they must display a "No Candy Here" sign on their front doors.

In Flagler County, Sheriff Donald Fleming said he has set halloween safety standards as a top priority because kids will flood the streets Saturday.

As a precaution, Fleming wants parents to be aware that sex offenders live in their communities.

He has prepared a list of registered sex offenders in Flagler County and their address.

Fleming is giving all parents advice: Keep your eyes on your children and instruct them never to get into a car alone or to enter the home of any stranger.

"Please be safe this year. Lets make this a fun event for the youngsters," said Fleming.

He said Fleming says that will the recent tragic murder of 7-year-old Somer Thompson, this information is vital to the parents in the community.

The sheriff is recommending that trick-or-treaters limit their door-to-door activities to 6 to 8 p.m. Younger children should visit the various trunk-or-treat events being offered locally by churches and other groups.
