JACKSONVILLE, FL -- After three hours of road closures, evacuations and bomb squad work, police now say the device was a package designed to look like a bomb, but was not actually a bomb.
Around 1 p.m., police began investigating the suspicious device in a vehicle near the McDonald's at 8th Street and Davis.
They evacuated Darnell Cookman Middle School, McDonald's and the nearby Walgreens store while the bomb squad went to work on the device.
Shortly after 4 p.m., police declared the device was made to look like a bomb, but was not. It is being treated as a hoax, and the area is still closed because police are looking for clues.
Davis Street remains closed between 6th and 8th, and the businesses are also still closed. The ramps to and from I-95 at 8th Street were closed for about 3 hours this afternoon, but reopened shortly before 5.
The 1,400 students at Darnell Cookman were evacuated to a nearby church, where buses and parents picked them up.
No homes were evacuated, as police determined no residents were in danger.
